About DiceGem

Updated

DiceGem is a small independent studio that writes its own HTML5 games and publishes them for free at dicegem.com. Every game on this site is built in-house: the rules, the computer opponents, the screens and the text. We do not host games made by other studios, and we do not run any real-money gambling.

What you will find here

How we work

Each game is written against a shared, tested game framework. The short version of our process (the long one is in How we make games):

  1. Rules come first, as pure code. A game’s rules contain no clock, no network and no hidden randomness; the same seed and the same moves always produce the same game.
  2. Tests before code. New rule behaviour starts as a failing test. Every game’s test suite then plays hundreds of complete games with computer players to catch rule bugs, stuck positions and illegal states.
  3. Hidden information stays hidden. What a player sees is computed separately from the full game state, so a game cannot leak the deck or an opponent’s hand to the screen.
  4. Checked in a real browser. Before a game ships, an automated browser plays through it and screenshots its screens for layout, readability and dark-mode problems.
  5. Every file licensed. Sounds, textures and fonts are CC0, open-licensed or made by us, and every file is listed with its source on our credits page.

What changes on the site each month, from new games to rule fixes, is listed in our monthly studio reports, counted from our version history.

Independence

DiceGem is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by any casino operator, game provider, or the owner of any game trademark. Where a game is based on a traditional public-domain game (for example Klondike, Backgammon or Baccarat) we use its traditional name; we do not use brand names that belong to other companies.

Games on other sites

Our games are also offered to other websites, which can embed them in an iframe. When you play a DiceGem game on another site, that site’s own privacy policy and terms apply to the page around the game; ours apply to the game itself.
