How to play

Dragon Tiger is a staple of Asian casino floors, and a hand takes about as long as it takes to read this sentence. Two cards are turned over, one under the dragon (龍) and one under the tiger (虎), and the higher one wins. That’s the whole game.

Card order. Ace is the lowest card, worth 1. Then 2, 3 and so on up through 10, Jack, Queen and King, the highest. Suits play no part in who wins.

A hand:

  1. Pick a chip (10, 50, 100 or 500) and place it on one or more of the four spots: Dragon, Tiger, Tie, Suited Tie. Each spot accepts 10 to 500 credits in steps of 10.
  2. Press Deal. Dragon’s card lands face up, then Tiger’s.
  3. Bets are settled at once. Rebet repeats your previous chips; Clear removes them.

Cards come from an eight-deck shoe: 416 cards shuffled together. When fewer than 52 remain, the next hand starts on a freshly shuffled shoe.

Bets and payouts

DragonDragon’s card ranks higher1 to 1half the stake returned
TigerTiger’s card ranks higher1 to 1half the stake returned
Tieboth cards have the same rank8 to 1–
Suited Tiesame rank and same suit50 to 1–

A suited tie pays on top of a Tie bet if you have both: with 20 on Tie and 10 on Suited Tie, two Queens of spades pay 160 plus 500 in winnings.

Because there are eight decks, a suited tie can be two identical cards, such as the 9 of clubs twice.

How often things happen

Take any card for Dragon. In a full shoe, 31 of the remaining 415 cards share its rank, and 7 of those are also the same suit. So:

  • a tie happens about 7.5% of the time, roughly 1 hand in 13;
  • a suited tie about 1.7%, roughly 1 in 59;
  • Dragon and Tiger each win about 46.3%.

From those, the house edges on a fresh shoe:

BetHouse edge
Dragon or Tiger3.73%
Suited Tie13.98%
Tie32.77%

The figures shift very slightly as cards leave the shoe, but stay close to these.

The road

The bead grid above the betting spots records recent results in columns of six: D for Dragon, T for Tiger and = for a tie, with Dragon in red and Tiger in blue. Screen readers get the counts of each.

It’s a faithful record and nothing more. With 416 cards in the shoe, one hand tells you almost nothing about the next, and the grid doesn’t track which cards are gone.

Strategy

Stick to Dragon or Tiger. They’re mirror images with the same 3.73% edge. The house’s only advantage comes from taking half your bet when the two cards tie.

The Tie bet is the worst value on the table. 8 to 1 sounds generous until you see it wins once in 13 hands. Roughly a third of every credit you put on it is lost in the long run.

Suited Tie is the better long shot. It’s still a 13.98% edge, but far less costly than the plain Tie, and its 50 to 1 payout is where the big single wins come from.

Betting both sides is pointless. Dragon plus Tiger wins one and loses the other on most hands, and loses half of both on a tie.

Don’t read the road for streaks. Long runs of Dragon happen by chance and end by chance.
