How to play

Everyone has fed coins into one of these at a fairground: a glass cabinet, a pile of plush toys and a crane that never quite closes hard enough. This version keeps the cabinet and the crane but swaps the mystery for a posted price list. Six prizes sit in a row on the floor of the machine, each tagged with what it pays.

  1. Choose a stake from the bet buttons under the cabinet: 1, 2, 5, 10 or 20 credits. Your choice is remembered for the next visit.
  2. Watch the claw. It glides along the rail from one wall to the other and back, taking a little over two and a half seconds per pass.
  3. Press Drop, tap the glass, or hit Space or Enter when the claw is over the prize you want. The machine is split into six equal lanes, and the claw centers itself over whichever lane it was in when you pressed.
  4. The cable lowers, the fingers close, and the claw lifts. If the prize comes up with it, the claw carries it to the chute on the left and you’re paid the prize multiple times your stake. If it slips, the toy wobbles back into place and the stake is gone.

After every drop the six prizes are shuffled into a new order, so the crown might be on the far left one turn and dead center the next. The claw also pauses its sweep while the page is hidden, so switching tabs won’t make you miss a moment.

The same table lives inside the machine: open Prizes and grab chances below the cabinet to check it during play. Win 25× or more and the screen throws confetti.

Where the 95% comes from

Each grip chance is simply 95% divided by the prize multiple. The ball pays 2× and holds 47.5% of the time; 2 × 0.475 = 0.95. The crown pays 100× and holds 0.95% of the time; 100 × 0.0095 = 0.95. Every lane is worth exactly 95% of your stake on average, so the machine keeps 5% no matter which prize you chase.

That also means your timing has no effect on the grip. Lining up perfectly on the crown gives the same 0.95% as a sloppy drop that happens to land in its lane. Skill decides which prize you try for, never whether you get it.

Strategy

With every lane priced the same, the choice is about the shape of your session, not the size of it.

Ball hunting is the calm option. You win almost half your drops, each win doubles the stake, and a balance moves in small steps. A hundred drops at 1 credit cost 5 credits on average, and the actual result rarely strays more than about 10 credits either side of that.

Crown hunting is a long wait for one big moment. You need about 105 drops on average for a single crown, and roughly four players in ten will still be waiting after 100 tries. When it does land, 100× at a 20-credit stake is 2,000 credits.

The middle prizes trade between those two. The bear at 10× hits about once in ten drops, which keeps things moving without the ball’s tiny wins.

A few practical points:

  • Aim early. The sweep is steady, so start your press slightly before the claw reaches the lane, especially near the walls where it turns around.
  • Raise the stake for the long shots only if you can afford the dry spell. The edge is the same at every bet size; the swings are not.
  • Mixing prizes is fine. Changing targets every drop doesn’t help or hurt the long-run 95%.

If you like posted odds with a physical feel, Basketball Shot works on timing too, and Coin Pusher keeps the arcade theme.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a trick to catching the crown?

No. The grip roll depends only on the prize, so a perfect drop and a lucky one have the same 0.95% chance.

Why did the claw go to a different prize than I expected?

It drops into the lane it was over when you pressed, then slides to the middle of that lane. Pressing a fraction late near a lane edge picks the neighbor.

Do the prizes move between drops?

Yes. All six are reshuffled after every drop, win or lose.

Which prize gives the best return?

None. All six return exactly 95% of the stake on average; they differ only in how often they pay and how much.

Can I win anything real?

No. Credits exist only inside this game and can't be bought, withdrawn or traded. If you run out, a button tops you back up to 1,000.
